Managing Director, SqwidNet
Phathizwe Malinga is the Managing Director of SqwidNet, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dark Fibre Africa. He is responsible for building an Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity business in South Africa in partnership with international IoT giant Sigfox and is driving innovation through IoT by working closely with SqwidNet’s ecosystem of partners.
Malinga is passionate about the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and the impact it will have on Africa’s life expectancy. With IoT being the cornerstone of data-driven decision-making, he is exposed to amazing Africans, in business and society, using IoT and other 4IR technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine-learning, and robotics to continuously improve their products and services, and our quality of life.
He has been involved in the information technology and the telecommunications industry for over two decades. Before joining SqwidNet, Malinga was the Head of Software Development and IT Application Strategy at Life Healthcare Group.
He completed his Executive MBA from the Graduate School of Business, Cape Town and continues to guest lecture with the university. He is also a faculty member of Singularity University, and finally, is privileged to sit on the board of Bizmod Consulting (Pty) Ltd as a non-executive director.
Chief Sales and Marketing Officer
As the Chief Sales and Marketing Officer of SqwidNet, Chetan is entrusted with sales strategy formulation, product innovation and go-to-market execution for the IoT network provider. He is a highly accomplished telecommunications sales professional and has fulfilled various sales roles over the past 18 years with some product management earlier in his career.
Prior to joining SqwidNet, Chetan occupied a General Manager position at the second national operator for fixed line telecommunication services in South Africa, Neotel. As the General Manager specialising in Business Development, he led, guided and managed a team to secure new business with some headline wins.
Chetan has been instrumental in successfully creating new, and repositioning existing sales strategies across a multitude of market segments to cater for a diverse and ever-changing business environment.
He is known to lead from the front and is notable for actively mentoring his team. Chetan’s strengths are his creativity, drive and leadership. He thrives on new challenges, particularly those that expand the company’s reach. He has attracted numerous accolades for his results and his success is underpinned by building quality relationships with clients.
Chief Technology Officer
Andrew Heuvel holds the position of Chief Technology Officer in SqwidNet where he is responsible for the end-to-end operations of South Africa’s premier IoT network. He has been in the telecommunications industry for more than 25 years and has held several executive roles within different organisations.
Prior to joining SqwidNet, he was the CTO of Telkom Internet. During his tenure, South Africa’s largest Internet Service Provider (ISP) was transformed to a standalone ISP and launched uncapped, soft-capped and introduced zero rated products. He also held the position of Executive – Network Transformation, responsible for the introduction of Telkom’s Multi-Service Access Node (MSAN) to deliver high speed VDSL/Fibre technologies and the Executive – Technology Strategy and Introduction position, where he was responsible for setting Telkom’s technology strategy in line with international standards and best practices while introducing these technologies through the governance and operational process to launch new and/or enhance existing products and services.
Chief Solutions Officer
Ushal Moonsamy is the Chief Solutions Officer at SqwidNet, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dark Fibre Africa. She is responsible for organising and directing the solutions team to deliver on key business objectives such as facilitating end-to-end IoT solution productisation, driving activations, defining and implementing supporting processes to effectively reach strategic goals and working closely with the sales team to define and drive proof of concepts. She is also responsible for ensuring that quality standards are maintained, best practices are adhered to and that potential threats to project implementation timelines are anticipated and addressed.
Moonsamy has 17 years’ experience in the information and communication (ICT) sector across multiple functional areas. Prior to joining SqwidNet, she held various senior positions with Vodacom and Nokia Siemens Networks. She started her career as a performance and then a network design engineer at Siemens Telecommunications.
Moonsamy has qualifications in both the Electronic engineering and commercial fields. She obtained an MBA from Gordon Institute of Business Science and is driven by building, leading and mentoring teams for success.
With the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) destined to change the future significantly, she is passionate about driving business outcomes through the lens of digital transformation to ensure relevance in the future.
Executive: Solutions and Innovations
As the Innovations and Customer Solutions Executive at SqwidNet, Sean is responsible for driving technical innovation within the organisation and advising customers on strategic technical decisions to enable key business outcomes.
Sean has extensive experience in both hardware and software development and has held senior positions in companies operating in the telecommunications, mining, security and tracking industries. Having operated in the wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) system development industry for over 10 years, Sean has a wealth of information on traditional IoT technologies.
He has an in-depth understanding of the emerging wave of LPWAN technology and the phenomenal impact that this sector will have on how we interact with the physical world. Before joining SqwidNet, he was the Technical Head of IoT at a leading wireless telecommunications company and was responsible for defining and executing the technical IoT strategy within the organisation.
Sean has a passion for enabling solutions that will have a sustainable impact on business processes and the environment in which we live. He holds a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Science from the University of Johannesburg.
Executive: Network Operations
Kagiso is the Network Operations Executive at SqwidNet, He is responsible for overseeing network readiness, day-to-day operations, maintenance and availability.
Kagiso has more than 10 years’ experience in the ICT environment, having held senior roles in Solution Architecture, Technical Product Development, Business/System Analysis and System Development, System Engineering and System Administration, Data Centre Standards and Technologies as well as Infrastructure Design, Planning, Engineering and Operations.
Prior to joining SqwidNet he was Head of Strategy, Architecture and Innovation for the largest ISP in the country. He was the technical lead for the ISP repositioning initiative, which optimised the people, process and technology aspects of the ISP to enable Telkom to best provide an internet service as well as Value Added Services that will drive the demand for broadband. He was also responsible for Network Operations for Telkom’s Fixed and Mobile Internet Service.
The combination of his extensive experience in the ICT industry, his drive for excellence and passion for superior customer experience is what drives him to ensure that our network is always meeting our customers’ need by enabling their journey to success and being there in the moments that matter.
