A note from our Editor

Getting our students ready for the 4th industrial revolution

This week we hosted a team of researchers from the Botswana Institute for Research Technology and Innovation, which falls under the Ministry of Tertiary Education in Botswana. Their mission is to identify, develop and adapt appropriate technologies that provide sustainable innovative solutions through co-creation and collaboration.

Their reason for visiting us was to find out more about IoT and SqwidNet as drivers of IoT in Southern Africa. They would then take this information back to their country and prepare to introduce new modules in their tertiary education to help prepare their students for the fourth industrial revolution.

During the State of The Nation Address President Cyril Ramaphosa mentioned that “several ordinary public schools will be transformed into technical high schools” and new technical and technology subjects will be introduced to respond to new emerging technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT). In the next few years higher education will be one of the most effective tools in getting our students and educators ready for the fourth industrial revolution.

We, as IoT drivers, also have a role to play in this by forming partnerships with the tertiary education sector. This can be through mentorships, internships, and sponsoring school projects just to name a few. As SqwidNet we are already experimenting with this by partnering with the University of Johannesburg where we provide them with free connectivity and hardware for their electronics projects to help make sure these students are ready for the fourth industrial revolution.
