The 73rd session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 73) started this week and it is scheduled to last for nine working days. The theme of the general debate is, ‘Making the United Nations Relevant to All People: Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Peaceful, Equitable and Sustainable Societies.’

Touching on sustainable societies, President Cyril Ramaphosa mentioned in his speech that, “It is vital that we deploy every means at our disposal to address youth unemployment and ensure universal access to educational opportunities that are appropriate to the changing workplace, we need a deliberate programme to ensure that the digital revolution which carries such great potential for both disruption and empowerment is effectively harnessed to promote social justice as well as human progress.” As SqwidNet this is something we are aiming to achieve through our entrepreneurship programmes and other outreach programmes that are looking to upskill the youth and prepare them for the disruption that IoT is bringing to the traditional workspaces. We believe that in doing so we create an environment that is conducive to investments that will lead to more jobs, which is great for our economy.

“I had the privilege of being invited to speak at the 3rd installment of the Tech Meet Up event, organised and hosted by the Tshimologong Precinct on Thursday 20th Sept. The audience consisted mainly of students, academics, entrepreneurs and developers, all of whom were united in the common goal of broadening their personal knowledge base, as well as finding new ways to positively impact society through technology. I often see new developers and entrepreneurs struggle to convert their passion and prototypes into commercially viable products.

My talk for the evening was titled “The IoT Opportunity: Concept to Commercialisation” and was aimed at empowering the audience with some fundamental guidelines and thought processes to help them move their product through the different stages of development and into mass production. The session was interactive and engaging, with a multitude of innovative ideas being discussed throughout the evening. Each time I attend an event such as Tech Meet Up, I am reminded of the immense opportunity that lies within the minds of the people of South Africa, and I believe that we have not yet begun to fully tap this vast resource.”
